Nonviolent Communication Companion Workbook

The Nonviolent Communication Companion Workbook is an essential tool for anyone practising the art of Non-violent Communication (NVC). For those unaware of NVC it is a particular form of communication that seeks to meet peoples individual needs by expressing oneself without assigning blame or using manipulative language either positive or negative.

The book is a guide that provides information, activities and assignments that offer assistance to any NVC practitioner and form the basis for a greater applied understanding of this communication method. Teachers will find this useful in developing new courses or improving existing materials. The book contains a reference and resource section that is perfect for those who want to read more on the subject.

Whilst NVC may not be everyone's cup of tea, the book does provide an interesting perspective on dealing with problems. For those who are NVC practitioners the book can help you in implementing the method and is a brilliant addition to your current library.

Sustainable Home Refurbishment

Sustainable Home Refurbishment
The Earthscan Expert Guide to Retrofitting Homes for Efficiency
By David Thorpe

Today environmentalism and energy efficiency is, or should be, at the forefront of all we do in terms of new builds. However for the majority of us with homes build before the developments we see today the experts must be ready to bring our homes up to speed in the most effective ways possible. This book is a guide to that process.

When someone like George Monbiot says 'This is an excellent book... It should be the first stop for anyone seeking objective advice in a field cluttered with misleading claims. I couldn't recommend it more strongly.' you know the book is worth taking seriously. Covering a range of efficiency refurbishments for domestic settings the book is well presented and illustrated.

A book offering a strong range of information is what is needed and this book by David Thorpe, News Editor of Energy and Environmental Management magazine, covers a catalogue of topics from water use and re-use to draught-proofing.

As a not very practical everyday guy this book probably isn't written for me but if you work in the industry or are just one of the very able hobbyists out there this book is for you. If you haven't got a copy go out and get one pronto!

The Experiential Learning Toolkit

The Experiential Learning Toolkit: Blending Practice with Concepts
By Colin Beard

Senior Lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, Colin Beard, presents this range of practical exercises based around the theory of experiential learning. Essentially experiential learning, when you cut through the jargon and simplify it to it's basic components, is simply the idea that learners learn more effectively from practical experience. The book describes the given theory behind the activities it presents allowing the reader to know not only what she is meant to do but also why she is meant to do it.

Colin has experience with clients in not only higher, further and adult education but he has also worked with corporate organisations and the book reflects this diversity. The book covers everything from effective customer services to developing creativity.

Well presented with 'tips' and 'further reading' suggestions, this book provides a resource for trainers that covers both the theory and practice of experiential learning - while other publications only provide one or the other. Whatever the field of business you are bound to find something relating to it in this book – if you are a trainer this book was written for you!

The Bunny Hugging Terrorist

Never underestimate Joan, at first glance she could be any ordinary OAP, but this could not be further from the truth. A 90 year-old animal rights campaigner and author of 'The Bunny Hugging Terrorist' could never be so labelled. Joan has gone on hunger strike; chain herself to railings, occupied the Canadian embassy and at 86 embarked on a mission to confront the illegal fishing vessels with environmental enforcement group Sea Shepherd and is still out on protests to this day.

The book certainly covers many different aspects of the animal rights movement but it is essentially a personal tale that will connect with the reader regardless of political viewpoint. Joan's tale is one well worth telling and she tells it brilliantly well.

The book is an excellent read and it is well worth getting your hands on a copy even if you couldn't give 'a hoot' about animals.

Welcome to My New Book Review

I've started this blog to review the specialist niche books, not the best-selling fiction. This is for books that are of interest to those they are addressed at, not the whole world. Having said that you may come across a few bits and bobs on the blog addressed at a wider audience and I hope you enjoy that as well.

If you're a publisher, publicist or author who has a book you would like to send me please get in touch. I will accept copies of most books if approached but will tend to seek out the sort of material I want from co-operative publishers as a general rule of thumb.
